Getting Sick + Recovering
Even “healthy” people get sick. For tweens and teens, 4–8 times per year is normal. For adults, 2–4 times per year is typical. Kids get sick more because they have more exposure and closer contact. Understanding whether an illness is caused by a virus or bacteria helps you respond the right way. The goal isn’t to never get sick—it’s to recover well.
🦠 VIRUSES
Viruses are easy to catch and easy to spread.
- Examples include colds, flu, and COVID-19.
- They spread through the air (coughing, sneezing, talking), being close to someone who is sick, and touching surfaces and then touching your face.
- A virus gets inside your cells and uses them to multiply.
- It usually feels like a whole-body illness—you may feel tired, congested, have a headache, sometimes a fever, and generally just feel “off.”
- You can’t kill a virus with medicine—you have to get through it.
What helps: Sleep more than usual , Drink a lot (water + electrolytes), Eat simple, real food , Use steam or take hot showers , Slow your schedule down
What doesn’t help: Pushing through like you’re fine , Overloading sugar (can increase inflammation), Taking antibiotics “just in case”, Expecting to feel better overnight
🧫 BACTERIA
Bacterial illnesses are more specific and sometimes not contagious.
- Examples include Strep throat, Urinary tract infection, and some ear or sinus infections.
- They spread through direct contact (like sharing drinks), through cuts or openings in the skin, and sometimes develop inside your own body.
- Bacterial infections usually feel more focused—such as sharp pain in the ear, throat, or bladder. Symptoms often don’t improve or may get worse, and a fever may stick around or come back.
- Bacteria are living organisms. Antibiotics can kill them when needed.
What helps: See a doctor if it’s not improving or getting worse , Take antibiotics if prescribed, Keep resting and hydrating
What doesn’t help: Ignoring strong or worsening symptoms Stopping antibiotics early
🤔 THE TRICKY PART
Sometimes an illness starts as a virus, then turns into a bacterial infection.
Watch for: You were getting better, then worse again , A new fever later , Pain becomes very specific (ear, throat, sinuses)
💭 TAKEAWAY
You won’t avoid every illness. But you can support your body, avoid what doesn’t help, and recover well.
